The Base Hospital, Homagama

The Base Hospital, Homagama is located in the divisional secretariat area of Homagma, Colombo district, Western Province. At the moment, this is a type A Base Hospital and has the second highest catchment population in Sri Lanka (649,178)

Local philanthropist, late Mr. B. A. Semaneris Appuhamy donated six acres of his prime land with purposely constructed buildings to provide free health care to people in Homagama metropolitan area. As a result, this hospital was established on 16th of February in 1946 at its current location. After that this hospital was upgraded to a base hospital on 26th of January in 1997

A Brief History of the hospital

The Base Hospital, Homagama is located in the divisional secretariat area of Homagma, Colombo district, Western Province. This hospital is a donation received from Bamunuarachchi Foundation and founded in 1946. Within 50 years it has been promoted to the level of a Base Hospital Type A.

At the moment, this is a type A Base Hospital and has the second highest catchment population in Sri Lanka (649,178), which is second only to Colombo South Teaching Hospital.  During 2022, the Base Hospital Homagama catered 54,765 OPD admissions and 51,874 indoor admissions. The annual clinic attendance exceeds 125,000 per year. The hospital is functioning with bed capacity of 500 and with total staff of 840. 

The Base Hospital Homagama has many subspecialties including  Anesthesia, Radiology, ENT, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Orthopedic surgery, Venereology, Hematology, Histopathology, Microbiology, Nephrology and Forensic Medicine in addition to the main specialties which includes Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology. There are 25 specialized consultants working in the Base Hospital Homagama.

The Base Hospital Homagama has 24 hours functioning Emergency Treatment Unit. The OPD has a computerized system for patient registration, consultation and pharmacy. The accident and emergency unit is also expanding with the construction of a new building. There is a new operation theatre complex with the capacity of 4 operation theatre beds, including an Orthopedic Theater. New ICU has the capacity of 10 beds.  It also has a well-equipped laboratory and it also provides service for the nearby two Primary Medical Care Units under the satellite system of laboratories. The Radiology department has facilities for CT imaging as well, which reduce the need for transferring the patients in accidents and emergencies.  The Cardiology Unit has facilities for echocardiography and exercise ECG. The Dialysis unit functions with 9 beds and planning to expand the service with kidney transplantation in near future. The Base Hospital Homagama also has a well-established Endoscopy Unit, a Blood Bank and a Central Sterile Supplies Department. The Base Hospital Homagama also provides the service of Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists. The Central Sterile Supplies Division has two sterilizers at the moment.  It also has a well-established Quality Management Unit and an Infection Control Unit. 

Furthermore, Base Hospital Homagama has provided teaching facilities for medical students from University of Sri Jayawardanapura for nearly 8 years. It has been also provided training for the intern medical officers, the medical officers who are on postgraduate training, midwives and attendants. Therefore, Base Hospital Homagama has services and facilities way beyond those of a Base Hospital.

The location of the hospital is closer to the southern highway entrance/ exit and therefore, it is important to cater for accidents and emergencies. On the other hand, multi model transport center / Makumbura and Panagoda industrial zones are located closer to the hospital. Homagama area has rapidly expanded as an education and economic hub in Sri Lanka with the establishment of Institute of Technology at Diyagama, NSBM Green University, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayawardanapura at Maththegoda, Buddhist & Pali University at Pitipana, Mahinda Rajapaksha Vidyalaya and International Sport Complex etc.

Therefore, the improvement of the capacity of delivering health care services of the Base Hospital Homagama will contribute to serve significant number of patients in the area with the rapidly expanding population. It will also reduce the burden on the surrounding other hospitals which includes DGH Avissawella, Colombo South Teaching Hospital and National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
